The Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF) seeks candidates for the position of North American Editor-in-Chief of Osteoporosis International (OI) for a 5-year term beginning in late 2026. An international multi-disciplinary journal, which is a joint initiative between the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the Bone Health & Foundation (BHOF), Osteoporosis International provides a forum for the communication and exchange of current ideas concerning the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. This position also oversees, in collaboration with IOF, the journal Archives of Osteoporosis.
Responsibilities
The Editor-in-Chief works closely with Springer, the publisher of the journals. The Editor-in-Chief oversees the peer review process and content development, including the following:
- Selecting and supervising Editors and Editorial Review Board members
- Providing editorial direction for the journal and its content by identifying emerging areas of importance and soliciting papers for submission
- Directing the review process to ensure timely and efficient handling of manuscripts
Selection Criteria
Successful applicants will demonstrate the following attributes:
- Possess and articulate a strategic vision for a strong and vital journal and be committed to the continued improvement of the journal.
- Be a highly distinguished member of the bone research community through clinical practice, research, publications, professional society involvement, and other activities.
- Strong organizational and managerial skills including an appreciation of and aptitude for the everyday tasks of editing (the review process, overseeing production, managing budgets and workflow, collaborating with associate editors and staff, delegating responsibilities as appropriate, and communicating effectively with authors, reviewers, the BHOF Board of Trustees and staff as well as the incumbent European Editor-in-Chief for the journal.
- An excellent scholarly publication record including experience with journal publishing through one’s own scholarship.
- Familiarity with academic editing such as prior editorial service for a journal, guest editing of a special issue or editing scholarly volumes.
- Have a working knowledge of the process of managing the operation of a scientific journal and have prior service on one or more editorial boards or equivalent.
- Work in an environment that accommodates the Editor’s workload.
- Be prepared to serve as Editor for 5 years, subject to reappointment after this term.
- Reside in North America.

In addition, describe your approach to ensure diversity (geographic, scientific, other) of potential candidates for associate editor and editorial board.
- Vita or Resume that accurately portrays your experience and publication history, indicates your current affiliations, and lists your current contact information.
- Evidence of strong institutional support, which may be a letter of support or other documentation from your academic institutional leadership, if applicable.
