ARLINGTON, VA (April 5, 2017) — The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), the nation’s leading healthcare organization dedicated to bone health, announced today a new partnership with Farmacopea, Inc., an independent, minority-owned and women-owned agency that consults with clients on healthcare advertising and communications to target Spanish-speaking patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals. Together, NOF and Farmacopea will create culturally relevant educational materials about osteoporosis and bone health, including a Spanish-language website, fact sheets, videos, research translations, and more.

NOF’s most recent prevalence report showed that 2.5 million Mexican-Americans suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass. The prevalence report used 2010 U.S. census information for its population reporting, so only people of Mexican descent could be identified within the Hispanic community residing in the country. The impact of osteoporosis on the Hispanic population nationwide is likely far greater.

“Osteoporosis causes two million broken bones in the U.S. each year,” said Amy Porter, executive director and CEO of NOF. “We’re so grateful to Farmacopea for partnering with us and sharing their expertise to help us reach under-served populations and provide the most up-to-date and clinically relevant information about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.”

“Hispanic women, in particular, need to understand the risk for osteoporosis, the steps to prevent it and, if they already have it, the treatment options available,” said Dr. Maria Luisa Toledo, partner, scientific director and head of operations at Farmacopea. “Educating our large U.S. Spanish-speaking audience in a culturally intelligent and sensitive communications program is a major step toward changing the myths and misconceptions about bone health in Latino women. We are eager to support the National Osteoporosis Foundation in their critical work to lessen the impact of this condition.”

NOF and Farmacopea will have Spanish-language materials available in time to distribute for May’s National Osteoporosis Month. The Hispanic education campaign will continue to rollout throughout the year as additional resources become available.
